Denton, Texas

Established in 1857, Denton was named for John B. Denton who was a lawyer, preacher, and a soldier.  His grave can be found on the courthouse lawn in the center of Denton’s historic downtown square.  The centerpiece of the square is the old Denton County Courthouse, which was erected in 1896 and restored in 1987.  The courthouse contains a museum highlighting antique and original photographs and artifacts from the city’s founding to current day.  Denton is also a main city that tops a triangle formed by itself, Ft. Worth and Dallas.  Two of the many great things about Denton are its culture and its housing in the Metroplex.

Education: Denton is proud to be home to two public universities, one of which being the fourth largest in the state of Texas with more than 32,000 students.

Music:  Inspired by the UNT music department, Denton’s trademark has to be the sounds of jazz.  Musicians trained in Denton go far!  The Grammy winning band Brave Combo and also the talented Norah Jones are proud to call Denton home.

Arts:  A wide variety of cultural activity is available through Texas Woman’s University, University of North Texas, and other civic organizations.  Concerts, plays, lectures, and exhibitions are just a few of the diversions one can find in Denton.

Parks and Recreation:  Denton residents enjoy 19 public parks, a public swimming pool, 20 tennis courts and 3 recreational centers.  Golf is played at Denton Country Club, TWU Pioneer Golf Course andat the Eagle Point Golf Course.

Religious Organizations:  Denton has places of worship representing 29 denominations, including Islam and Judaism.

Clubs and organizations:  Denton has over 225 clubs and organizations ranging civic to service groups.  One of these is sure to suit your lifestyle.

Annual Events:  People of all ages come to enjoy The Annual Texas Storytelling Festival at the largest event of its kind in the southwest.  The tales told will capture adventure and imagination to and children and adults alike.  To coincide with the blooming of the redbuds in early March, come join the Denton Redbud Festival and Romp celebration that includes activities, education, booths, and exhibits throughout the day.  An annual Denton Arts & Jazz Festival dedicates three days to the arts with over 1,300 performers on 6 stages, fine arts and crafts, children’s art activities, food and games all on the last full weekend in April.  For the animal lover, Dog Days of Summer will entertain you with a dog parade, a show, and pet tricks to name a few.  These are just of the few dozen of annual events.
